Living with Diabetes

When you have diabetes, your doctor may suggest changes to your lifestyle. These changes may include exercising more, restricting carbohydrate intake, and taking insulin.

Preparing for an Injection

Start by selecting the right type of insulin needles and syringes. Your doctor will help you choose the needle best suited to your needs. As a general rule of thumb, children's needles are typically 3/16 of an inch in length, and adult needles are usually 1/2 inch long. These diabetic insulin needles also have a small gauge, often in the 29 to 31 range.

Alternatively, you have the option of using an insulin pen. Your healthcare provider can guide you in your selection.

Next, with your injection supplies on hand (along with your insulin), prepare the site by washing your hands and cleaning the area with soap and water (or you can use an alcohol wipe).

While the area is drying, prepare the injection your syringe or pen by following the instructions you received.

Lastly, pinch about an inch or two of skin at the injection site. Insert the needle at a ninety-degree angle and press the plunger. After the injection, hold the needle in place for ten seconds before removing it and throwing it into your sharps container.

Can I Reuse My Needles on Myself?

Manufacturers advise against this practice. That is because the tip of the needle may become weakened during the first use. Using it a second time runs the risk of having the tip break off under your skin or causing other damage.

Do I Need a Prescription to Buy Insulin Syringes or Pens?

Most states do not require a prescription to buy insulin syringes with needles or pens, but some do, and others limit the number you can buy without a prescription. Please check your local laws. If you purchase in a location where a prescription is required, we will verify your prescription before shipping your order.

How Long Does Insulin Last?

Most insulin stays good until the date of expiration, usually about one year after the date of purchase, if it is properly stored. Once opened, vials will keep for up to twenty-eight days. After that, you should throw them away. Once used, pens are good for seven to twenty-eight days, depending on the pen.

Can I Reuse my Insulin Pen?

If your pen is a 'disposable' pen, you cannot. When you have a reusable pen, you will need to change needles before each use, as needles are single-use only.
