Below the tongue, on either side, there are two heat pockets typically that are usually near or at core temperature. An oral, or mouth thermometer, is often the best and easiest way to take an individual's temperature, especially in children. Most modern thermometers are made of soft rubber or plastic and unlike older oral mercury thermometers, current thermometers will not break or shatter if the user accidentally bites down. Also, most modern thermometers no longer use mercury, making them safer to use.
