How to Choose an Adult Diaper

Choosing an adult diaper is as simple as choosing your needed level of absorption, choosing the type of wicking you need, choosing your backsheet material and choosing the correct size. Below we have provided some guidance to help you determine what products will work best for you.

Absorption: is an important factor for most people. There are those who simply want volume to absorb heavy leakage, while others who want the briefs trim, yet still quite absorbent. When you choose the absorbency level it is recommended to get just what you need. If you purchase a heavy absorbency brief when you really need a moderate, you will end up with something that is more cumbersome than it needs to be. However, if you are using the product at night, you may want something with the maximum absorbency to prevent possible spillover. Some briefs that are designed for nighttime use are Tranquility ATN and the Dignity PM.

Another important factor is whether you are using the product for urinary or fecal incontinence. Many of the tab-style diapers will work for bowel incontinence, but the Nu-Fit Adult Briefs are designed specifically for trapping fecal leakage due to an advanced zoning system. However, please note that you should not leave a person all night if they are experiencing fecal incontinence due to the risk of skin breakdown.

Wicking: is the action of drawing moisture away from the skin and into the absorbent core. When you are experiencing a heavy flow, using the product at night, or have sensitive skin advanced wicking is important. Some briefs that feature an advanced wicking are the Wings Choice adult briefs and the Prevail Breezers.

Backsheet Material: varies depending on how you intend to use the product. Night time briefs typically have a plastic back, but are also designed to be breathable. If you are not mobile, a breathable brief is even more important to have to prevent skin breakdown. Sometimes these include a wetness indicator for additional protection. Briefs designed to be used during the day feature a cloth-like backing so that they are more comfortable and more discreet to wear.

Size: Finding the right size is very important. If your brief is leaking onto the bed, it is possible that the brief is just too large. If you cannot fit your palm between the two tabs of the brief in the front that means the diaper is too large. Also, if the brief is too small it will not protect as well as it should. We have a number of bariatric, youth and adult size diapers, but if you have a difficult to find size, try the First Quality Specialty Size Briefs.
