Tegaderm transparent dressing consists of a thin film backing with a hypoallergenic, latex-free adhesive that gently, but securely attaches to skin. Tegaderm transparent dressings are breathable, sterile, transparent and waterproof, and provide a barrier to external contaminants such as bacteria, viruses, and body fluids. Tegaderm dressings are available in a variety of sizes and shapes.3m Laboratory testing has proven Tegaderm dressings provide a viral barrier (HIV-1 and HBV) while the transparent dressing remain intact without leakage.
Tegaderm Transparent Dressing is commonly used for:
- Clean closed surgical incisions
- Skin graft donor site
- Stage I or II pressure ulcer
- Superficial wounds such as abraisons, skin tears and blisters
- First and second degree burns
- Protective cover to prevent skin breakdown
- Secondary dressing over gauze, alginates or hydrogels
- Protective eye covering

Tegaderm Dressing Features:
- Versatile - Tegaderm dressing protects IV sites, enhances wound healing, prevents skin breakdown and protects clean, closed surgical incisions.
- Easy to Apply - Tegaderm minimizes application time and saves dressing waste and costs. The frame delivery system used by Tegaderm provides maximum control of the film for rapid appliation. If the adhesive surface accidently touches itself, Tegaderm can be seperated and applied (unlike other transparent dressings).
- Gentle Adhesive - Tegaderm is made of a hypoallergenic, latex-free adhesive that is gentle on the skin, but securely holds to catheters and other devices. The adhesion used by Tegaderm does not become excessive overtime, which would otherwise make the patient uncomfortable. Tegaderm's hydrophilic nature, it is useful under moist conditions and in difficult to reach areas
- Breathable - Tegaderm allows moisture vapor and gas exchange, which is better for normal skin function.
- Waterproof, Sterile Barrier - Protects against external contaminants (such as bacteria, viruses, blood and body fluids). Patients may bathe or shower with Tegaderm, provided that the transparent dressing completely covering the wound area and is sealed. Tegaderm dressing is sterile as long as the outer package is intact.
- Comfortable - Tegaderm conforms to body contours, stretches easily, and prevents skins abraisons. Tegaderm has a flat profile.
- Transparent - Because Tegaderm is a transparent dressing, wounds can be easily monitored without disturbing or replacing the dressing.
- Enhances Wound Healing - Tegaderm helps keep a moist environment at the wound site, which allows for easier healing. Tegaderm also prevents scab formation and dehydration of the wound. Epithelial cells can easily migrate across the wound surface, preventing excess pain.
- Cost Effective - According to 3M's website HICPAC/CDC guidelines for the Prevention of Intravascular Catheter-Related Infections supports longer wear times for transparent dressings like Tegaderm.
General Application Tips for Tegaderm Transparent Dressing:
- Make sure that the Tegaderm dressing can fit over the catheter, insertion site, or wound. There should be at least a one inch margin of transparent dressing attached to healthy skin.
- Clip excess hair where Tegaderm is to be applied, but do not shave because of the potential for cuts and abraisons.
- Do not stretch Tegaderm transparent dressing. Doing so may cause the adhesive to fail.
- For the best adhesion, apply pressure to the Tegaderm transparent dressing from the center out to the edges.
- Allow all preps to thoroughly dry before applying Tegaderm transparent dressing.
- For custom shapes, use sterile scissors and cut before removing the application liner. If your are using Original Frame or Picture Frame Tegaderm, cut in such a way that two sides of the frame still remain.
Tegaderm Transparent Dressing Removal Hints:
- Gently grasp one edge of the Tegaderm and slowly peel from the skin in the direction of hair growth. Try to peel the transparent dressing back over itself, rather than pulling it straight up.
- Grab one edge and pull to stretch so that adhesion is minimized.
- Use an adhesive remover suitable for skin while peeling the Tegaderm Transparent Dressing
Contraindications for Tegaderm Transparent Dressing:
Tegaderm transparent dressing should not be used on persons with sensitivity to iodine. Warning: Tegaderm transparent dressing should not be re-sterilized by any method.
