Different Compression Levels of Arm Sleeves Explained

Different types of compression levels are available, depending on the needs of the individual patient. These levels include mild, medium, and heavy compression. Compression is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg); the higher the mmHg indication, the more compression pressure is applied.

  • Mild compression therapy (15-20 mmHg) is the lightest compression therapy available and is used for occasional swelling or pain.
  • Medium compression therapy (20-30 mmHg) offers a bit more pressure to affected areas for enhanced circulation and support.
  • Heavy compression therapy (30-40 mmHg) is the highest level of compression available and is often recommended or prescribed by doctors. This type of compression therapy is usually recommended for chronic conditions and in conjunction with other types of therapies.

Compression therapy can be used for several different conditions and patient applications, including breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL), which is a common oncological management consequence after a mastectomy procedure. Lymphedema causes anywhere from soft tissue swelling to skin discoloration, hyperkeratosis, dermal thickening, and ulcers.

There are two types of compression garments: graduated and uniform compression. Uniform compression garments maintain the same mmHg throughout the length of the sleeve; graduated compression garments provide a range of pressure. Graduated compression therapy allows venous return, decreases venous pressure, and relieves aches.
