Gravity Infusion suspends the IV medication bag placed on an IV pole. It connects to a compatible gravity administration set like the B. Braun Primary Gravity Set. It includes a roller clamp to regulate the flow at an infusion rate of drops per minute, calculated by the medical professional. A primary infusion can be administered by gravity or pump, but a secondary piggyback infusion typically is administered via an IV pump.
IV Infusion Pump or an Electronic Infusion Device (EID) controls the medication delivery with its programming options to set the dose rate as well as intervals for multiple doses.
The infusion pump is clamped onto the IV pole and connected to the administration set. Each set comes with a sterile spike to puncture the IV medication bag. The pump requires specialized training and should only be used by trained medical staff to avoid error and harm to the patient.
