Types of Stretchy Bandages

Elastic Bandages

Elastic bandages are great at adding a little compression to limbs that will promote healing and reduce inflammation and swelling. While the option of adding pressure is by choice, there may be no need for additional pressure — always take the recommendations of a medical professional into account when choosing the amount of compression to implement in a wound dressing. Elastic bandages are also flexible enough to be trimmed or cut, allowing for the fingers or thumb to be wrapped in order to avoid sliding. Medline's Matrix Elastic Bandages have the flexibility to wrap around the wrist with any amount of pressure a patient requires but are also flexible enough to be torn to allow for appropriate thumb or finger placement.

Support Bandages

Support bandages work by wrapping around a body part, limiting the mobility of the wrapped area while still allowing for some flexibility and usage. Surgical Appliance's Ankle Support with Wrap Around Strap, for instance, provides 360-degree support to the ankle while still allowing the wearer to walk comfortably.

Retention Bandages

Retention bandages and wraps do the best job of holding dressings in place gently. These types of stretchy bandages are best used by patients who have fragile or sensitive skin that may be easily damaged.

How to Wrap a Wrist with ACE™ Brand Elastic Bandages

Video Section

Begin by holding the edge of the bandage between your thumb and forefinger. Start wrapping around the wrist, beginning at base of palm and wrap several times. Wrap diagonally through hand and palm and repeat one to two times. Continue wrapping up wrist overlapping by one half of the previous layer and half way between the wrist and elbow. Secure the bandage with the elastic clips or if using the self-adhering bandage by smoothing down the end.
