Spectra 9 Plus Breast Pump Overview

Spectra S9 Plus Breast Pump is a double electric breast pump that is ideal for mothers who want to multitask or be on the move. Using a rechargeable battery, the Spectra S9+ comes with multiple modes and vacuum settings to make each session successful and efficient. The Spectra 9 Plus Pump also uses Natural Nursing Technology to mimic natural breastfeeding.

The pump prevents backflow, which keeps moisture from entering the tubing and pump motor.

When To Replace Parts

Although the Spectra Baby 9 Plus is a durable pump, parts will wear over time. For this pump, there are multiple aspects that need upkeep:

  • Valve membranes need to be replaced every two to eight weeks.
  • Duck valves should be replaced between one and three months.
  • Backflow protector diaphragms should get replaced between three and six months.
  • Tubing should be replaced every once in a while.
  • Breast shields should be changed every half a year.

Plastic parts can be recycled after being sterilized. Pump motors can be sent to Spectra Baby or recycled at an electronics recycling center. Other parts should be thrown in the garbage.

Milk collection kits should not be reused when having a second child. Do not share a pump or buy a used pump from someone else.

How To Use Spectra 9 Breast Pump

Sterilizing

Before using the Spectra S9 Portable Double Electric Breast Pump, it should be sterilized. Grab a pot and fill it with water. After bringing it to a boil, place all parts of the pump -- except for tubing, power adapter, and pump motor -- into the water and let them sit for around five minutes. Remove the parts from the pot in a safe manner and let them air dry.

Assembly

Snap in the AC power adapter into the pump and plug it into an outlet. Plug the other side into the pump. While the Spectra 9 Plus Advanced Double Electric Breast Pump charges, assemble the backflow protector by putting the uppercase backflow protector and the lowercase backflow protector together (with the middle protector piece between them) until they click. Screw the valve into the breast shield, and then screw the breast shield onto the milk-collection bottle.

Connect the tubing to the backflow protector and the top of the pump. Connect the breast shield to the other side of the backflow protector. When double pumping, follow the previous steps but for the second tubing, backflow protector, pump, and milk collection bottle. Once the pump has charged, users are good to go.

How To Select Breast Shield Size

The Spectra 9 Plus Rechargeable Breast Pump comes with 24-millimeter breast shields, the most common size. However, that doesn't mean it's a universal size. To determine the needed shield size, mothers should measure the diameter around the nipples after pumping, according to the manufacturer. A breast shield should be two to three millimeters larger than the nipple. Measure the nipple at various times throughout the week or day because nipple size can vary depending on how full a breast is.

If little milk is expressed or pain or discomfort is being experienced, the breast shield may be the incorrect size. The Lansinoh Smartpump Double Electric Breast Pump comes with both 25-millimeter and 30.5-millimeter breast shield sizes.

Breast Pump Modes

The pump has massage, expression, and vacuum modes. Massage mode has a fast cycle speed, whereas the expression mode has a slower cycle speed. Change the modes from massage to expression and vice versa by pushing the wave-like button. Vacuum mode is the strength of the suction and has strength levels between one and 10 in expression mode and one and five in massage mode.

A timer automatically starts (or restarts) when the pump is turned on, and the pump will shut off after 30 minutes.

Pumping Tips

  • Wash hands before and after a session.
  • Remember to stay hydrated.
  • Find a relaxing, comfortable place to pump.
  • Setting a pumping schedule could assist with easier expression.
  • Making skin contact with the baby, thinking of the baby crying, or looking at a picture of the baby a mother is pumping for could help encourage letdown.
  • A typical pumping session is around 20 minutes, but times vary.
  • Pumping while breastfeeding could help save milk for later and yield more milk.
  • Pumping should not be painful.

Cleaning

The Spectra 9 Plus Double Electric Pump parts that come in contact with breastmilk should be cleaned with soap and water, except for the tubing. Tubing can be washed by hand or in the dishwasher but must be air-dried or dried with a towel. Parts don't need to be cleaned after every session unless otherwise advised.

How To Store Breastmilk

Breastmilk can be stored in three ways: room temperature, cooler bag, or refrigerator. According to the manufacturer (see product manual), freshly expressed breastmilk can last between four and eight hours at room temperature. When placed in a cooler bag with ice, it can last between 12 and 24 hours, depending on how long the ice lasts. Refrigerated freshly expressed milk may be used for three to eight days. Storage guidelines differ for previously refrigerated or frozen breastmilk and fresh breastmilk after feeding. Never refreeze previously frozen breastmilk.

Spectra S9 Pump vs. Spectra S1 and S2

The S9 pump is more discreet and smaller than the Spectra S1 and S2. However, the S9 has fewer features. The S1 and the S2 come with built-in nightlights, 24-millimeter and 28-millimeter breast flanges, and the ability to see how many hours of pumping a mother has done. The S1 comes with a rechargeable battery, like the S9, whereas the S2 isn't rechargeable.
