Coflex Unna Boots were invented by Paul Gerson Unna, a German dermatologist in the late 1800s. He found that ulcers of the leg and varicose veins healed much more successfully when kept moist with a zinc oxide-based paste. The paste was lathered on the skin, covered with a bandage, and the paste was then applied over the bandage. In modern versions of the Unna Boot, the zinc oxide and calamine combination is impregnated into the gauze or bandage.
