The Medela Starter Supplemental Nursing System (SNS) is a specialty feeding device to supplement the baby with breast milk or formula at the breast until the mother's milk supply is sufficient. It's a solution that a lactation specialist often recommends when a mother's milk supply doesn't meet the baby's needs. The SNS is used to stimulate the mother's breast to increase milk production. This is an ideal solution when a mom desires to keep breastfeeding and would rather stimulate her own supply than go straight to infant formula.
The SNS works by adding breast milk or formula into a collection container that feeds through a tube to a soft teat that's taped down to the breast. The baby latches onto the breast as normal so that the suckling stimulates the breast while the baby gets the supplement and sometimes even direct breast milk simultaneously. This method allows baby to get used to latching on to the breast instead of a bottle nipple as the mother's supply comes in.

After filling the container with the breast milk or formula, the mother can clip the container to secure it the bra or shirt to keeps the hands free. The yellow clamp on the tubing allows mom to customize the milk's flow rate. Discard the entire system after feeding.
