ResMed is a leader in the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) industry. ResMed develops, manufactures and distributes CPAP machines, CPAP masks and other Respiratory Therapy devices. Each of these respiratory devices are used to treat a range of respiratory ailments from snoring to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Founded in 1989, ResMed continues to make advances in the noninvasive treatment of sleep apnea. Studies have found that 20% of the adult population has a sleep disorder. Of that population segment, 90% are undiagnosed and untreated. ResMed offers physicians and the public education in its outreach programs to help inform the many who have obstructive sleep apnea but go untreated. Research also continues to be a significant investment for ResMed. Currently product lines offer quiet CPAP machines that respond to individual needs and CPAP masks that are comfortable, maintain a seal and provide greater freedom of movement.

ResMed employs over 3,000 individuals around the globe to serve people with respiratory disorders. ResMed's best research and innovation breakthroughs have been with Sleep Apnea. The most predominant form of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive Sleep Apnea occurs when an individual’s throat relaxes during sleep and partially or completely blocks the airway to the lungs. Sleep apnea patients with obstructive sleep apnea may snore or stop breathing for several seconds, until their brain triggers a wake-up response. Often these patients wake up gasping for air. This sleep-obstruction-wake up cycle can happen hundreds of times a night, though most do not usually remember waking up.

Untreated sleep apnea can cause long-term negative effects on the heart, metabolism and overall health. Sleep Apnea can affect anyone. It can affect people who are fit or overweight, old or young, male or female. The noticeable symptoms of sleep apnea include daytime sleepiness, loud snoring, lack of energy, morning headaches, depression and high blood pressure. Diagnosis and treatment for sleep apnea begins with a simple sleep test.  You doctor must recommend a sleep test with a prescription or referral. Depending on your health factors and insurance, your doctor may recommend either an overnight test in a sleep center or a home test. A doctor’s prescription is required to purchase a CPAP machine for use at home.
