How Pulse Oximetry Works

Pulse oximeters measure the amount of oxygen being carried in the blood. Pulse oximeters are commonly used by individual users and healthcare professionals. These devices are non-invasive, cost-effective, and compact for on-the-go use. Pulse oximeters clip to the end of the patient's finger and uses a light source on the inside to detect the body's oxygen saturation. This light source emits a red light and infrared light in conjunction. The body absorbs the light differently depending on the amount of oxygen saturation, and this information communicates with the device's computer to provide user-friendly reports for the user or caregiver. VitaPulse II also provides data on pulse rate.
