Nasco Life/form Ostomy Care Simulator Overview
The Nasco Life/form Ostomy Care Simulator is an anatomical model for teaching and practicing abdominal ostomy procedures in medical and educational settings. This fully functioning model features realistic internal and external anatomy with both colostomy and ileostomy stomas. It is constructed with soft, pliable plastic material to look and feel lifelike for an optimal educational experience.
This realistic model provides immersive, hands-on learning ideal for medical professionals and students who want to give the best possible care. It can also offer peace of mind and confidence to ostomy patients and their caregivers who may be nervous about caring for a new ostomy.
The Life/form ostomy trainer can demonstrate stoma dilation, cleaning of the stoma, ostomy bag application, and colostomy irrigation. To replicate drainage and excretion, two ports are located at the back of the model; one port is for pumping water with a syringe to the ileostomy and the other port is used to insert synthetic stool to the colostomy with a separate syringe.
While the simulator carries a five-year warranty and is meant to be reused many times, it must be handled with care. To maximize its lifespan, instructors and students will want to treat the simulator as if it were an actual patient - lending an additional element of realism to using the model.
Simulated stool (which may be reconstituted and reused), syringes, and K-Y Jelly -- the only lubricant the manufacturer recommends with this product -- are included with purchase. If more of these items are needed as replacements or to accommodate a large class size, they are available conveniently pre-packaged in ostomy simulator kits. Simulator Care Instructions
- Flush the Nasco Life/form Ostomy Care Simulator immediately after use with warm water to prevent the synthetic stool from drying and adhering to the colostomy tubing. To cleanse, first place a bag or container over the front of the stoma or place over a sink or toilet in order to collect drainage. Insert a syringe into the entry port and forcefully expel warm water through the tubing and out of the stoma. Repeat until no more synthetic stool flushes out of the simulator.
- The syringe used for simulated stool should also be cleaned immediately after use. To do this, repeatedly fill with warm water and expel forcefully until clean.
- With mild liquid soap and warm water, wash the skin around the stoma to remove any leftover adhesive.
- To clean surface dirt or stains off the model, use a soft cloth with gentle soap and lukewarm water.
- Allow the simulator to drain and dry as completely as possible before returning to the carrying case. Ensuring that all surfaces are dry will help to prevent mildew growth.
- Never place printed paper or plastic, such as newspaper, on the simulator, as it will cause indelible staining. Avoid using a ball point pen around the model as this will also permanently stain.
- Only use K-Y Jelly lubricant with this simulator. The manufacturer recommends that no substitutions be made. Never use petroleum-based lubricants such as Vaseline; they will rapidly deteriorate the plastic in the model and void the warranty.
