The History of Kleenex
The origins of Kleenex stretch back to 1920 with the launch of Kotex feminine products. Kotex was a portmanteau derived from the words cotton and texture, created to satisfy Kimberly Clark's requirements for product names that are easy to say, easy to remember, short, and easy to explain. Kleenex was later derived as a portmanteau from the words Kotex and clean because Kleenex was originally marketed as a disposable cold cream remover. In 1925, the first ad for Kleenex was released, claiming it "the new secret of keeping a pretty skin as used by famous movie stars." However, Kleenex, being a beauty product, became a product primarily consumed by women. But soon in 1926, customers wrote into Kimberly Clark telling about their uses for the facial tissues as disposable handkerchiefs. Intrigued by this, the company's head researcher tried to persuade the head of advertising to market the tissues for colds. Despite their initial reservations, Kimberly Clark conducted a test in the Peoria, Illinois, newspaper, featuring ads showing Kleenex as a product meant for its intended use of removing cold cream and as a disposable handkerchief. From this test, they discovered that 60% of respondents reported using Kleenex as disposable handkerchiefs. This reaction prompted a complete shift in Kleenex marketing, their slogan changing from its movie-star-centric mantra to "don't carry a cold in your pocket," by the 1930s. Now, bringing us back to today, Kleenex has become the most popular brand of facial tissues. With products like Kleenex and Purell Hand Sanitizer the common cold only stays with us as long as we let it.
