The swab style is easier on teeth without scraping the gums. If gums need to be cleaned, such as in the instance of a patient with no teeth, the swabs can be used with a bit of cleaning solution to to help prevent gum inflammation.

The Kimberly Clark 12240 Oral Swabstick (also referred to as the Avanos Dentaswab or the Kimvent Ready Care DentaSwab) is not infused with a dentifrice, which is a component found in many kinds of toothpaste. The oral swabs are clear of any solution or cleaner. The Kimvent Dentaswab Oral Care Swabs are packaged all within their own plastic bag to keep them clean. Although not sterile, the swabs are sanitized.

An option for safe oral cleaning for patients with dementia who have a tendency of biting down, the swab sticks are sturdy to keep cleaning but will give in and bend if bitten down upon in order to provide some safety for the patient and reduce damage.
