AREDS
This was the first five-year clinical study that concluded in 2001. There were a total of 4,757 participants, ranging from ages 55 to 80, with 25% of participants finding a reduction in the risk of AMD progression and 19% of participants finding a reduced risk of moderate vision loss after five years.
AREDS 2
In 2006, another clinical study was conducted based on new findings on AMD. During this study, the National Eye Institute wanted to improve the original formula from the AREDS study. During this time, new data had suggested an association between beta-carotene and a heightened risk of lung cancer in those with a history of smoking. This new information promoted a study on a new formula that replaced beta-carotene with lutein and zeaxanthin.
The AREDS 2 study had 4,203 participants ranging from ages 50 to 85 years old. At the conclusion of the study, the new PreserVision AREDS 2 supplements demonstrated a reduction in the risk of progressing to advanced age-related macular degeneration. Eighteen percent of participants had a reduced risk compared to the participants that took the original AREDS formula. The NEI recommends a vitamin formula that contains the exact formulation used during the AREDS 2 study to reduce the risk of progression with AMD.
