Completing a Treatment

  1. Place the mouthpiece of your nebulizer in your mouth. (An aerosol mask is an option for those who have difficulties using a nebulizer.)
  2. Sit straight to open the lungs to their full capacity.
  3. Take slow, deep breaths.
  4. Try to fill your lungs so that you cannot take in any more air.
  5. Hold your breath for one to two seconds, or for the length of time your doctor prescribed.
  6. Breathe out slowly through the nebulizer's mouthpiece or through the mask.
  7. Repeat this cycle for the length of the treatment.
  8. Treatments usually take from five to twenty minutes.
  9. *When the medication cup is empty, and no more mist comes from your nebulizer, you are through with treatment.
  10. Turn off the compressor and clean your nebulizer.

How a Nebulizer with a Compressor Works

The compressor forces air into a tank. As more air comes in, the pressure increases. This pressurized air gets released into the nebulizer, driving the action. The nebulizer breaks liquid medication down into a fine mist. The mist-laden air moves through the mouthpiece and into the lungs.
