After a laryngectomy procedure, inhaled air bypasses the nose and mouth, traveling to the lungs through a stoma. As a result, cold, dry air enters the lungs directly, leading to coughing, increased mucus production, and more serious conditions like respiratory infections and sleep disturbances. Heat and moisture exchangers (HMEs) mimic the key functions of the nose and upper airways for better breathing and less discomfort.

The Provox Xtra HME cassette features a specially treated foam core that absorbs heat and moisture during exhalation. This  which is then utilized for warming and humidifying inhaled air.
