The Jelco Point-Lok Needle Protection Device (Smiths Medical 4139) is a secure cover for needles and sharps that do not have an integral engineered sharps injury protection (ESIP) device. The Smiths Medical Point-Lok Needle Protection Device is a stand-alone protection device that locks onto and secures a contaminated needle and meets the Federal Register definition of an Engineering Control. To secure the needle, place the Point-Lok Device on a flat, sturdy surface and insert the needle into the open end of the Point-Lok Needle Protection Device where a patented mechanism locks the needle in place. A layer of soft plastic in the bottom of the Point-Lok device creates a leak-resistant, air-tight seal. Once the needle is in place, slide the unwinder toward the syringe remove the syringe from the needle luer lock device, then simply discard in the needle and Point-Lok device in an appropriate sharps container.
