Therapeutic foam mattresses are designed in a such a way to distribute weight to prevent health conditions from developing among those who need to remain in bed for an extended period of time. The Multi-Ply Series 6500 Pressure Redistribution Foam Mattress, by Drive Medical, is a fine example of such a mattress. It provides three unique layers of foam that are cut, contoured, and designed to make the most comfortable sleeping area that also helps prevent pressure sores from developing.

The 6500 foam mattress has three layers made for specific functions. Altogether their ultimate goal is to distribute weight over a broader area instead of the small pressure points that may develop sores over the long-term. These areas are the shoulder blades, elbows and lower back, and heels. This mattress has a top layer of die-cut high-density foam in the head and torso area, and a special high resilient foam in the heel area.

The middle layer has multiple chambers that give and flex where there is weight. This will allow the body to evenly sink into the mattress and flex when there is movement as a way to prevent sheer forces on the skin. The middle layer of the foot section has a precision channel cut foam to provide additional pressure redistribution. The bottom layer of high-density foam provides a foundation to keep the patient from sinking in too low.

This foam mattress is enveloped in a two-layer cover. The top cover is a two-way stretch fabric that will reduce heat build-up and provide a low shear surface that is anti-microbial and water-resistant. The bottom layer is completely vinyl. It will be fully waterproof on the bottom and will prevent staining. The cover zipper is concealed and has a flap that goes over the opening to prevent liquids from getting inside the mattress core.

The mattress meets Federal Fire Code CFR 16 part 1633. The mattress has a 300 pound weight capacity.
