Details

Adventure Medical Mountain Series Medical Kits are not hospitals in a bag. However, once you see what's inside, you'll begin to think they might be. In short, the Mountain Guide Medical Kit and Mountain Mountaineer Medical Kit are just first aid kits: meaning, they're a collection of basic medical supplies to manage specific injuries. However, what sets these kits apart from other first-aid kits is the amount of stuff they offer and how that stuff is organized. This kit is primarily designed to meet the needs of outdoor emergencies. In fact, these kits are based upon the most current guidelines in wilderness emergency travel medicine. The Mountain Guide Kit (Adventure Medical Kits 0100-1007) is perfect for guides along wilderness trails and has enough supplies to manage the wounds of 7 people for up to 14 days while you make your way back to civilization for further medical help. The Mountaineer Kit (Adventure Medical Kits 0100-1009), on the other hand, is perfect for long outdoor excursions or in disaster situations where access to medical care may be a long-time away. This kit has the supplies necessary for up to 10 people for 28 days. Additionally, it comes with a removable summit kit for short excursions away from your base camp.

Both kits come with a unique bag that is water-resistant and has a map printed on the back that gives you greater detail of the supplies included with your respective kit. Now, you may be thinking, so what, big deal, other kits have the same thing. However, these bags are made with a special find-it-fast design that separates the contents of each kit into specialized pouches. Normally, other first aid kits are disorganized and that disorganization gets exacerbated the more the kit is used, especially for minor things. However, in an emergency, you don't want to be pulling out handfuls of bandaids looking for a trauma pad. Instead, the Mountain series separates the products and labels them according to the emergency so you'll know exactly where to find what you're looking for.

Just a few of the items included in these kits include QuikCkot the preferred hemostatic dressing used by the United States Military; professional tools used by hospital personnel like EMT shears, a CPR face shield, and forceps; and a copy of Wilderness & Travel Medicine: A Comprehensive Guide by Eric A. Weiss MD. Plus, the bag is reusable so you can restock your supplies or add to them with items like McKesson's Absorbable Surgical Sutures.

Wilderness Medicine

Wilderness Medicine is a broad that encompasses several disciplines. In an article published in the World Journal of Emergency Medicine entitled Wilderness Medicine, the authors Douglas Sward and Brad Bennett describe some of these fields as "[focusing] on special circumstances (such as avalanches) while others have a broader scope (such as trauma care).1" They then go on to describe 14 different areas of focus:

High Altitude

This specialization focuses on ski resorts and mountaineering and deals with complications surrounding altitude sickness.

Dive Medicine

This specialization focuses on beaches and the oceanside and deals with complications associated with long exposure to high pressures. This is typically trained for by dive instructors and sometimes lifeguards.

Envenomation

This specialization focuses on toxicology involving venomous animals including snakes, insects, and marine animals. This is commonly trained for by certain forest service members or lifeguards.

Trauma

This specialization focuses on injury associated with outdoor activity and is commonly practiced by emergency ski staff and forest service personnel.

Hyperthermia

This specialization focuses on treating complications associated with exposures to extreme heat for extended periods. Commonly practiced by forest service members or staff manning races or runs in the warmer months.

Hypothermia

This specialization focuses on treating complications associated with exposures to cold temperatures for extended periods. This is commonly trained by those working as lifeguards, ski patrol personnel, or forest service members.

Frostbite

This specialization specifically focuses on treating damage caused by the flesh freezing. Unlike Hypothermia, frostbite doesn't need to affect the entire body to cause lasting damage. This is commonly trained by those working in cold climates like ski patrol personnel or forest service members.

Avalanche

This specialization focuses on trauma and cold-related injuries after the event of an avalanche. This is commonly practiced by ski patrol personnel and forest service members.

Military Medicine

This specialization focuses on battlefield injuries and treating extreme trauma associated with gunshot wounds, knife wounds, shrapnel wounds, and basic mechanical trauma like broken bones. This is most commonly practiced by members of an armed service or law enforcement.

Epidemiology

This specialty is not so much hands-on as observational. This specialization focuses on studying the incidences of injury and death in the wilderness. This information is used for risk mitigation and trip planning by various organizations.

Search and Rescue

This specialization focuses on locating missing persons and being able to treat whatever acute complications they may be experiencing upon discovery. This is commonly practiced by forest service members and law enforcement.

Travel Medicine

This specialization focuses on the common issues associated with long-distance travel, mainly, disease contraction in foreign climates. This practice is mostly practiced by members of government disease control agencies and hospital personnel.

Disaster Medicine

This specialization focuses on responding to sudden emergencies where conventional medical attention is impossible to acquire. This is most commonly trained by law enforcement, emergency medical technicians, and armed service members.

Ultrasound

This specialization focuses on using small ultrasound machines like a McKesson Lumeon Doppler Unit to assess trauma in situations where medical resources may be strained or unavailable. This is most commonly trained by various emergency service personnel.
