Topical Hemostatic Dressing Overview
SafeGauze HemoStat Topical Hemostatic Dressing absorbs 400% of its weight in blood and fluids for oral injuries or surgeries. Made with cellulose, the Medicom SafeGauze molds onto the area of interest upon contact by turning into a gel. This molding ability eliminates the requirement of an adhesive to keep the dressing in place. The gel forms a barrier that holds in and clots the blood and protects against bacteria. After a couple of days, the dental plug dissolves into saline and glucose. The natural ingredients in the hemostatic dressing make the dressing safe to put into the mouth. Healthcare providers should look at a patient's medical history to know if this product is a good fit for them.
Once the patient has recovered from surgery, they can use toothpaste like Crest Toothpaste to clean their teeth.
Conformability
The SafeGauze HemoStat Topical Dressing turns into a gel and conforms to an area within seconds. This gel fills the wound and keeps the dressing in place, and helps to stop the bleeding. According to the manufacturer, the cellulose in this product "has a pH neutral close to 7," so the dressing will not cause pain or irritation during its adherence. The dressing also promotes increased platelet interactions, which help with inflammation and immune cell regulation.
Hemostatic Agents
According to the manufacturer, "hemostatic agents are developed specifically to stimulate both primary and secondary hemostasis pathways to reduce the risk of hemorrhaging in clinical or emergency settings." This means that the SafeGauze works with the body to plug up wounds and control discharges of blood. The main role of hemostasis is "to maintain the fluidity of circulating blood… and prevent blood loss…" (Adamiak, et al.)1
