How It Works

The CapTel user dials the number they wish to call with the CapTel phone. This daily living aid features two types of captioning: assisted captioning with an operator and auto-captions that are generated by a computer. Either caption type can be set as the default with the option to change between the two at any time.

When users click the caption button, the call automatically connects to the Captioning Service. The CapTel service center uses a specially trained operator who transcribes the discussion using voice-recognition technology. The auto-captions are computer-generated, creating captions in real time without waiting for an operator to begin the call.

Please note: Federal law prohibits anyone but registered users with hearing loss from using internet protocol (IP) captioned telephones with captions turned on.

 

Answering Machine and Caller ID

This phone has an answering machine that allows callers to leave captioned voice messages when a call is missed. The screen also displays who is calling when subscribed to the Caller ID feature. The built-in phone book stores 97 frequently called numbers.

The captioning feature is free to registered users with hearing loss. It is paid from a federally administered fund at no extra cost to the user.

Are captions available in Spanish? 
Yes, enable Spanish captions by going to "phone settings," then selecting "Spanish captions" and clicking "enable."

Can I review the captions while still on a phone call? 
Yes.

What equipment do I need to receive captions? 
Connection to a telephone line, high-speed internet access and connection, and CapTel's power adapter. 

Can I turn the captions on or off anytime I want during a call? 
Yes. 

Does this phone have a speakerphone option? 
No, this is not equipped with a speakerphone option. However, users can connect an external speaker to the 3.5- or 2.5-millimeter audio jacks for speakerphone capabilities. 

If I call 911, can the captions still be displayed? 
Yes, the Hamilton CapTel phone can still display captions during 911 calls as long as the internet connection is active.
