The McKesson Mononucleosis Test Cassette is a standard and quick way to diagnose a patient with infectious mononucleosis. This illness, caused by the EBV (Epstein-Barr Virus), is a common illness that affects more than 3 million people per year, according to the Mayo Clinic. Mononucleosis, or Mono as it's called colloquially, is highly infectious and so it's important to catch it when it arrives to prevent further spreading. However, to do this, you need a way to verifiably diagnose it. That's where the McKesson Mononucleosis test comes in. This test is fast, simple, and is even CLIA waived for whole blood. Plus, with a McKesson Mono Test, you can have results in 8 minutes with more than 99% accuracy. With each kit, you'll get 25 cassettes, 25 black-line pipettes, 25 sample transfer pipettes, developer solution, negative control solution, positive control solution, an instructional insert, and procedure card: everything you need to perform a self-contained test. Plus, these tests have an 18-month shelf life. The only things your clinic or hospital will need to provide for these tests are PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and a sterile lancet like McKesson's SunMark brand pre-loaded lancets for collecting a blood sample.
How to Perform a Test
Before proceeding, wash your hands and don a pair of Exam Gloves followed by any other protective equipment deemed necessary by your institution or hospital. Next, you'll want to prepare the patient for drawing a blood sample by cleaning the patient's skin with some kind of disinfecting preparation product like McKesson Alcohol Prep Pad and allow to dry before administering the lancet. Prior to collecting a blood sample, label the patient's sample transfer pipette with their name and control number. You may now lance the patient's skin according to your institution's protocol. After lancing, allow a single drop of blood to form. Wipe this drop off with a Gauze Sponge. Once a second drop forms, use the sample transfer pipette and fill it to the indicated mark.
Prepare the test device by removing it from its packaging and placing it on a flat surface. Expel the previously obtained blood sample into the collection well. Add 2 to 3 drops of the developer solution into the lower portion of the sample well. Let test sit for 8 minutes before reading results.
Interpretation of Results
A positive result will be shown by both a pink-purple horizontal band appearing in the control and test positions simultaneously. If one line appears but it is a lighter shade of the pink-purple color as described previously, the results should be treated as positive.
A negative result will be indicated by a pink-purple line across the control potion, but nothing across the test position
An invalid result is indicated when a line does not appear in the control position
