The spike is long enough to penetrate through most any standard IV bag with no extensions needed. The spike can be fully discarded as it is made of safe recycle material.
The ICU Medical Ch-12 Bag Spike CSTD with clave connector and Dry Spike has a dry spike in order to penetrate entryways will little resistant. Once connected you can attach the adapter to the IV line to start the administrating session. You will clearly notice the blue tip to the side of the spike, this is the Clave Additive Port, the port is used when the additional administration of medicine or solutions is required.
