StatLock PICC Plus Catheter Stabilization Device for PICC Lines Overview

The StatLock PICC Plus Catheter Stabilization Device holds winged PICC catheters in place for patient safety. This product has been shown in studies to greatly improve patient outcomes and quality of care compared to traditional forms of PICC site stabilization. For example, this product typically replaces the need for sutures and is much more stable and long-lasting than tape. In addition to these benefits, several customizability options are available. Two anchor pad options are offered: closed-cell foam or nonabsorbent tricot polyester. In addition, users can choose between sliding post and fixed post options. This product is compatible with virtually any winged PICC catheter.

StatLock Stabilization Device PICC Plus has been shown to:

  • Increase catheter dwell times from 44 hours to 98 hours
  • Decrease unscheduled IV catheter restarts from 71 to 17%
  • Lower the rate of IV complications by approximately 67%
  • Decrease phlebitis rates by 80%
  • Eliminate suture-related needlesticks
  • Decrease material costs
  • Create efficiency, saving an average of 29 minutes per IV treatment compared to tape
  • Improve patient care

For use with peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs), this IV Stabilizer offers great versatility and ease of use. Just lift the transparent "gull-wings" on the stabilizer, place the catheter wings over the posts, and close.

How to Apply a StatLock Device

Important Notice: Read all user manual instructions and safety information before applying this device. A manual is supplied near the bottom of this page for convenience.

Skin Preparation

  1. Cleanse and de-grease the securement site with one or two alcohol prep wipes.
  2. Allow the cleansed area to dry completely.
  3. Apply the provided skin protectant pad to the securement site.
  4. Allow the area to once again dry completely. This will take about 10 to 15 seconds and the area will be smooth, not tacky, once the area has dried.

Fixed Post Device Application

  1. Place the catheter suture holds over the posts.
  2. Press the clear device lids closed, one side at a time.
  3. Peel away the paper backing.
  4. Place the anchor pad over the prepared securement site.
  5. Apply a transparent dressing either up to the anchor pad or so it completely covers the anchor pad.

Sliding Post Device Application

  1. First place one of the catheter suture holds over either of the posts.
  2. Slide the catheter and post toward the second post until the suture hole fits over it easily.
  3. Press the lids closed, one side at a time.
  4. Peel paper backing off.
  5. Place the anchor pad over the prepared securement site.
  6. Use a transparent dressing either up to either cover up the anchor pad entirely or so it covers the area up to the anchor pad.

How to Change a StatLock on a PICC Line

  1. Stabilize the catheter by pressing its center against the skin.
  2. Open the lids to disengage the catheter from its cradle.
  3. Lift the catheter.
  4. Use alcohol to wet and dissolve the pad's adhesive. This will loosen the corner of the pad.
  5. Once the corner of the pad is loosened, gently lift the corner.
  6. Gently stroke the undersurface of the pad with a q-tip soaked in alcohol or an alcohol wipe to dissolve the adhesive and then gradually remove the rest of the pad.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Often Should a StatLock Be Changed?
This item must be replaced at least once a week.

What should be used for disinfection prior to use of this product?
The manufacturer recommends using the chlorhexidine or Alcohol Preparation Wipe used for the insertion site on the securement site as well. Next, use the skin preparation pad that comes with this PICC stabilization device as it creates a protective acrylic layer that ensures better adhesion of the product. Be sure to allow the area to dry for 10 to 15 seconds after preparation. Once the skin is smooth and dry (not tacky), the stabilization device can be applied.

If IV tubing needs to be changed out, do I need to remove the stabilization device first?
This depends on the specific StatLock device. If there is a tape secured-PIV, the tape must be removed to change the tubing. For the StatLock IV Ultra, the stabilization device can be kept in place while the tubing is changed out. The device will need to be replaced if changing out tubing with a StatLock IV Select device. Read the instructions packaged with each device for more information.

Is this PICC line dressing change item sterile?
This product is sterile.
