This video covers the basic techniques for optimizing sound quality when using the Littmann model 3100 and 3200 stethoscopes. The sound sensor is located in the very center of the chest piece. Make sure that your point of contact with the patient is centered directly under the chest piece. You'll get the best results by using light, steady and consistent contact with your patient. Minimize movement of the chest piece on the patient to reduce frictional noise. One last tip, start your auscultation exam at a low amplification level and adjust it upward for difficult to hear sounds. By using the higher amplification levels only when necessary you'll reduce distracting noises during the exam.
