Overview: Squiggles Early Activity System by Leckey

The Leckey Squiggles Early Activity System offers floor positioning play therapy to help babies and toddlers with postural needs reach developmental milestones. The system includes a positioning booklet covering four positions to encourage physical, cognitive, and sensory development. Reaching these milestones makes it possible for the baby to move on to the next developmental skill. Based on the latest clinical research, the Leckey Early Activity System encourages play therapy while the baby is lying on their back, side, tummy, and sitting up. It also assists the baby in the transitory phase of getting upon the hands and knees to prepare for crawling.

How the EAS Wedge and Roll Supports Encourage Development

The Leckey Activity System back supports work to develop the baby's muscles in the neck, tummy, shoulder, and hip flexors because it requires them to lift their head and arms against the pull of gravity. Lying on the back during play is a baby's first stage of development and helps them become more aware of the world around them. Lying on the back also promotes sensory development since it is the position in which it is easiest for babies to focus their eyes.

As the child gets older, the next phase is to use the tummy supports that assist them in lying in the prone position. Regular tummy time strengthens their shoulders, neck, arms, and back. These muscles prepare the baby to hit the next milestone of sitting up. Lying on the tummy also promotes the child's ability to coordinate their vision with their hand movements.

The U-shaped floor sitting supports aid in stabilizing the baby's pelvis and torso, which allows the child to focus on moving their arms to reach for things around them. Sitting promotes cognitive development and coordination. This transitions the child to pull themselves up and prepare for crawling and ongoing sensory development.

Hands-and-knees position (four-point kneeling) removes many of the supports once the child moves out of tummy lying and sitting positions. This opens movement in all of the positions for the strengthening of the baby's hips and shoulders to prepare them for crawling. In addition to physical goals, there are also cognitive and sensory goals outlined with these weight-bearing activities.

The positioning system includes a convenient carry bag and a therapy manual that makes it easy for therapists and parents to maximize the benefits of the activity system.
