Choosing Kerlix Gauze

Kerlix gauze is a woven gauze made in several different forms for a variety of different woundcare applications. The most common is the sterile and non-sterile gauze rolls used for both primary and secondary dressings. The gauze fabric is pre-washed and fluff dried. It is 100 percent cotton that is woven with its unique crinkle-weave pattern for softness and liquid readiness. Kerlix gauze provides fast-wicking action, superb aeration and maximum absorbency. They edges are tight, with a fine finish, so the product does not produce loose ends or leave a lint residue. They are available in 6 or 12 ply thicknesses.

Choosing What Kerlix Gauze Type is Right for You

Kerlix Gauze is produced in a variety of different forms. They are categorized generally as sterile and non-sterile. For primary wound applications, or situations where the gauze will be placed directly on the wound, one should choose the sterile versions -- non-sterile may be best used for a wrap or cushioning, or for light cuts and scratches where an antibiotic ointment could be supplemented. Kerlix gauzes come individually wrapped or loose, cut in square or rectangular section forms, or in rolls. Note the different plys, these are number of cotton layers that make up the gauze. The thicker ply, 12-ply, is preferred for wounds with that have higher drainage -- the thicker the ply the more amount of wound exudate it will take up.

The following are sample situations and the selected choice of Kerlix Gauze:

  • Light wound with slight drainage - Sterile Gauze Squares - Try Kerlix 4 x 4 12 ply Sponge Gauze
  • Moderate wound application with heavier drainage - Gauze roll as a secondary absorber - Try Kerlix 6-Ply Bandage Rolls
  • Wounds prone to Infection - Antiseptic Gauze - Try Kerlix AMD Super Sponges

Variations of Kerlix Gauze and Suggested Uses

Kerlix gauze is offered in a great assortment of variation. Each gauze type is woven, made from cotton, yet has a different ply. The following are examples of different ply types starting with the least:

  • Kerlix 6-Ply Bandages: Kerlix Gauze Bandage Rolls, Kerlix AMD Rolls, and Kerlix Super Sponge Gauze
  • Kerlix 12-Ply Bandages: Kerlix Sponge 12-Ply, Kerlix Sponges 4 x 4 Inch

Kerlix gauze comes in pads, or squares. These are cut for smaller wounds and need to be secured to the skin with secondary dressing and surgical tape. A roll can be wrapped around the limb or abdomen, or simply pulled to the desired length and folded into a square for a thick area absorber.

Prepping the Wound and Applying Kerlix Gauze

Kerlix gauze preparation is really no different than most other woven gauzes, other than it has a unique fluff as an absorbing advantage. So starting with the wound itself, one would want to clean the area with 0.9 percent saline solution. Avoid cleansers or antiseptic washes as repeated use could irritate the skin. Afterward, the wound area is dried appropriately. With the wound area dry, the gauze is simply laid over the wound area, unless used as a secondary dressing. If used as a secondary dressing, the primary dressing, the dressing resting directly against the wound, will be applied first. Last, the dressing is secured to the skin, either using a secondary dressing with adhesive, or surgical tape adhered to the edges.
