Wheelchair Safety

Safe operating and handling of a wheelchair requires avoiding hazards and following the best handling practices and procedures. There are several handling procedures and techniques to overcome obstacles and maintain safe operation. The following guidelines are fundamental principles that can help the user and caregiver to comfortably handle safe mobility and maneuvering around and over ambulatory impediments and obstructions.

Reaching, Bending, or Leaning

There often arises instances where a wheelchair user needs to reach for something or pick something up. These instances bring additional safety risks as weight and balance come into play. Reaching, bending, or leaning often change the center of gravity and weight distribution for the wheelchair and the user. Positioning the user and the wheelchair can avert many of the dangers associated with tipping over in a wheelchair.

• DO NOT shift your weight or sitting position toward the direction you are reaching to prevent the wheelchair from tipping over.
• DO NOT attempt to reach toward objects on the ground or floor by reaching down between your knees.
• DO NOT lean over the top of the backrest to reach objects behind you.
• Position the wheelchair as close to the desired object as possible.
• Post the front caster wheels as far forward as possible and engage wheel locks.
• Point the front casters forward, creating the longest possible wheelbase.
• Only reach as far as your arm can extend without changing your seating position.
• Add Anti-Tippers to your wheelchair to avoid tipping backward.

Stairs

Stairs require two caregivers to assist with moving an occupied or unoccupied wheelchair up or downstairs. It is best to move the wheelchair unoccupied. Only use secure handhold supports such as the frame --that is not detachable. DO NOT use an escalator to move a wheelchair between floors.

• Rotate anti-tippers so that they face up.
• A caregiver positioned behind the wheelchair grasps the wheelchair frame and tilts the wheelchair back to the balancing point.
• Back the wheelchair up against the first step for going upstairs, or to the edge of the first step if going downstairs.
• Another caregiver positioned in the front of the wheelchair firmly grabs a non-detachable part of the frame, and both caregivers raise the wheelchair to the next step. If going down the steps, the caregivers lower the wheelchair to the next step.
• While progressing up or down the stairs, each caregiver takes turns moving one foot to the next step while the other steadies the wheelchair.
• Repeat the process until completing all the steps.
• Lower the wheelchair to the ground or floor after completing the last stair.
• Re-rotate the anti-tippers so that they face down.

Wheelchair Transfers

• Reduce the distance gap between the wheelchair and the targeted chair, bed, or toilet as much as possible.
• Turn both caster wheels parallel to the transfer target.
• Engage the wheel locks.
• The user should position as far back as possible in the seat to prevent damage to the wheelchair and to reduce the risk of tipping over. Note that user self-transfers require significant mobility and upper body strength; otherwise, a Transfer Board and/or a caregiver should assist.
• Remove or flip back the armrest.
• Swing away or remove the front rigging.
• Shift body weight onto the targeted transfer

Safety Inspection

A safety inspection at least every six months by a qualified technician helps reduce the risks of accidents and injuries. Cleaning will often expose worn or loose parts. Regular cleaning and maintenance will ensure the safety and extended life of your wheelchair's operation.

Safety Checklist

? Ensure that the wheelchair rolls straight with no excessive drag or pull to either side.
? Inspect for loose or missing hardware on the frame and cross braces.
? Inspect for a bent frame or cross braces.
? Check that the wheel locks DO NOT interfere with tires when rolling.
? Check that the wheel lock pivot points are free of looseness or wear.
? Check that the wheel locks are easy to engage.
? Ensure that the wheel locks prevent the wheelchair from moving when engaged.
? Inspect the seat and back for rips or sagging.
? Inspect the seat and back for broken or loose hardware.
? Inspect the back cane hand grips for wear, looseness, or deterioration.
? Inspect seat positioning straps for any signs of wear. Ensure buckle latches. Verify hardware that attaches the strap to frame is secure and undamaged. Replace if necessary.
? Inspect tires for flat spots and wear.
? Check pneumatic tires for proper inflation.
? Check that the quick-release axles lock correctly. Lubricate, if necessary.
? Check for excessive side movement or binding in the rear wheels when lifted and spun.
? Inspect rear wheels for cracked, bent, or broken spokes.
? Ensure all spokes are uniformly tight.
? Inspect hand rims for signs of rough edges or peeling.
? Inspect axle assembly for proper tension by spinning caster. Caster should come to a gradual stop.
? Adjust front caster and fork bearing system for wheel wobbles or binding.
? Ensure wheel bearings are clean and free of moisture.
? Check head tube locknuts for tightness.
? Inspect casters for cracks and wear.
? Inspect front casters for cracked, bent, or broken spokes.

Operational Safety

• Avoid storing or using a wheelchair near an open flame or combustible products. Serious injury or damage to property may result.
• DO NOT stand on the frame of the wheelchair.
• DO NOT use the footplate as a platform for standing. When getting in or out of the wheelchair, make sure that the footplates are in the upward position.
• ALWAYS use the hand rims for self-propulsion. Since the HANDRIMS are an option for this wheelchair, you may order with or without the hand rims. Invacare strongly recommends ordering the hand rims as an additional safeguard for the wheelchair user.
• Invacare recommends installing a non-folding device to keep the wheelchair from being folded when left unoccupied in a public place.
• DO NOT operate on roads, streets, or highways.
• DO NOT allow children to play on or operate.
• DO NOT operate on soft surfaces such as sand, grass, or gravel.
• ALWAYS check the hand grips for looseness before using the wheelchair. If loose or worn, replace IMMEDIATELY. Failure to observe this warning may result in injury to the user or bystanders.
• If exposed to extreme temperature (above 100°F or below 32°F), high humidity or becomes wet, dry before use, ensuring that the handgrips DO NOT twist on the handle; otherwise, damage or injury may occur.
• Anti-tippers are an option for 0° or 3° seat-to-floor angle on this wheelchair. You may order with or without the anti-tippers. Invacare strongly recommends ordering the anti-tippers as a safeguard for the wheelchair user.
• A seat-to-floor angle of 6° requires anti-tippers attached at all times.
• Anti-tippers MUST be fully engaged and release buttons fully protruding out of adjustment holes.
• Ensure both anti-tippers adjust to the same mounting hole.
• This manual wheelchair is for indoor and outdoor use on firm surfaces. When outdoors on wet, soft ground, or gravel surfaces, anti-tippers may not provide the same level of protection against tip over. DO NOT operate on soft surfaces such as sand, grass, or gravel.
• Invacare strongly recommends ordering the Seat Positioning Strap as an additional safeguard for the wheelchair user. The seat positioning strap is a positioning strap only. It is not for use as a safety device withstanding high-stress loads such as auto or aircraft safety belts. If signs of wear appear, replace the strap IMMEDIATELY.
• DO NOT attempt to stop a moving wheelchair with wheel locks. Wheel locks are not brakes.
• Wheelchairs equipped with push to lock wheel locks, elevating leg rests, and wheel lock extension handles, MUST have the wheel lock extension handles removed before swinging the elevating leg rests to the side; otherwise, injury or damage may result. • Engaging the wheel locks may not prevent the wheelchair from moving on all floor surfaces, including those that may be wet or slick. ALWAYS exercise caution when transferring into or out of the wheelchair.

Cleaning Instructions

• Clean with a damp cloth.
• When cleaning rear cane or handgrip areas, use only a clean towel lightly dampened with room temperature water.
• Verify that grips are dry before use.
• The use of soap or ammonia-based cleaning solutions will result in the handgrips sliding off the cane assembly.
