Telfa Wound Dressings

How to Choose a Telfa Dressing

Telfa dressings are specialized gauze pads that can either be used for primary or secondary woundcare applications. These dressings have specific qualities to give them unique advantages over regular gauze pads. Telfa dressing is similar to regular gauze in that it is made of cotton fabric. However, unlike regular gauze pads, there is a coating on both sides of the dressing to keep the material from sticking to the wound when placed directly on the wound opening. This non-adherent dressing is made for treating lightly draining wounds. It comes in variations that make it an all-in-one option, or as part of a layered woundcare dressing treatment involving either a primary or secondary dressing with a wrap to secure it to the skin.

How to Choose the Proper Telfa Dressing

Telfa dressings are used for people who need a dry non-absorbent dressing pad that will not stick to the wound. Telfa dressings can also be applied to dry wounds to protect the skin while it heals. They are made of cotton and have a non-adherent polymer coating so they do not stick to the wound, nor leave residue inside the wound bed. Because of these properties, the Telfa pad is ideal for wounds that could otherwise cause the material to stick and re-open healing wounds, as well as potentially leaving behind gauze particles that can complicate the healing process. Telfa dressing is designed to heal lightly exudating wounds and come in a variety of sizes and variation.

Telfa Pad Types and Variations

Telfa pads are available on Vitality Medical's website and a selection of the top four kinds of non-adherent gauze dressings are below. The following pads have a small brief on their unique properties:

  • Telfa Ouchless Non-Adherent Dressings: The original 'Ouchless' dressing with an absorbent cotton interior and a non-adhering outer coating.
  • Telfa Non-adherent Island Dressing: An all-in-one dressing pad that will seal the pad to the wound with its border adhesive sides, while the cotton island pad will not stick to wound.
  • Telfa AMD Non-Adherent Dressings: Also for lightly draining wounds, the AMD version is unique in that it is impregnated with PHMB, a antiseptic that kills micro-organisms.
  • Telfa Clear Wound Dressings: The only non-absorbent pad, the clear dressing has non-stick properties yet is permeable to allow oxygen to the site. The clear film allows one to observe the healing progress.

Telfa Dressing Applications

Most of the Telfa gauze is for lightly draining wounds. To apply, one simply affixes the pad by pulling off the sterile sealed package and laying the pad over the wound. The different lines of Telfa have several size variations, so simply choose the size that can cover the wound with some overlap. If the pad does not have an adhesive, simply use a bandage or secondary dressing with adhesive sides to secure the Telfa pad to the skin. Dispose of the bandage when saturated, or if it becomes wet.
