Hand Control Mitt for the Elderly
Hand Control Mitt for the Elderly Skil-Care Padded Mitten Logotype

Description

Fitting over the hands, mitten restraints are specially designed for elder care to prevent patients from scratching, picking or bruising others or themselves. Manufactured by SkiL-Careā„¢, these Padded Mitt Hand Restraints are equipped with tie straps to limit the patient's arm movements if required and can be used without the straps.

About SkiL-Careā„¢ Padded Mitt Hand Restraints

These SkiL-Careā„¢ mitten restraints feature a lightweight, comfortable and padded design with a buckle closure and materials designed to enhance airflow. For patients posing a risk to themselves or others, this solution:

  • Adds CoolLine mesh to the dorsal surface, which allows for air circulation and visual inspection by the caregiver and prevents unwanted perspiration, helping the patient be more comfortable.
  • Includes 3/4-inch thick foam padding on the grip side to help prevent injuries and promote greater comfort.
  • Can be used in bed or in a wheelchair.
  • Features an easy and convenient closure instead of the cumbersome traditional shoelace ties.
  • Reduces a patientā€™s ability to grab and pull out tubes, thanks to two inches of padding added to the palm area.
  • Is built to be reused: Simply remove the insert to wash and dry.
  • Further limits a patientā€™s arm movements when the tie straps are used.

To Use

The padded mitt restraints fit both left and right hands, with the palm of the hand facing the padding. The back of the hand faces the mesh. The included safety straps go around the patientā€™s wrist in the event staff deems restraint necessary.

SkiL-Careā„¢ manufactures numerous medical products to assist with patient restraint and protection, including for Ankle/Wrist Restraint, a Heel and Elbow Protector, the Geri-Sleeve and a Heel Float.

When is a Mitten Restraint Used?

Nursing homes and care facilities turn to hand restraints to protect patients who remove their bandages and dressings, pick and scratch at wounds, or grab and pull-out feeding tubes, catheters or nasogastric tubes. Mittens are a first line of defense safety mechanism in these cases, deployed in varying degrees when a patient poses a danger to themselves, other residents, staff members or medical professionals.

A mitten restraint system:

  • Prevents a patient from grabbing objects, including IVs, catheters other inserted tubes.
  • Blocks them from scratching and further damaging their skin or causing a wound to fester.
  • Halts a patient from interfering with their medical care.
  • Allows a patient to still move their arms when the straps arenā€™t used.
  • Can serve as a deterrent to destructive behaviors, including self-harm.
  • Helps limit the amount of sedative medications given to restrain patients posing a threat to others or themselves.
