Description

Silvercel Non-Adherent Antimicrobial Alginate Dressing with Silver provides an antimicrobial barrier for up to seven days. The amount of time between dressing changes is dependent on wound exudate levels. The non-adherent dressing features a non-woven pad made with a combination of alginate, carboxymethylcellulose, and nylon fibers that are coated in silver. The alginate part of the dressing helps manage the exudate. The silver coating on the nylon fibers acts as an antimicrobial agent to reduce the risk of infection.

This pad uses EasyLift Precision Film Technology to ensure that the dressing layer that makes contact with the wound is non-adhesive. This makes removal of the dressing pain-free. EasyLift technology also ensures non-adherence to the wound after absorbing exudate.

What is Silvercel Alginate Dressing?

It is a sterile absorbent dressing suitable for use in moderately to heavily exuding wounds. The wounds may have infection or have increased risk of infection. It has an outer perforated film layer designed to prevent adherence of the dressing to the wound and the shedding of fibres. It also facilitates fluid absorption. The absorbent core contains silver-coated X-Staticfibres, which provide the antimicrobial action.1

When to use this silver bandage.

Use this product for the treatment of increased bioburden or to prevent infection."2

A consensus document published in Britain "recommends that silver dressings be used initially for a two week 'challenge' period. At the end of the two weeks, the wound, the patient and the management approach should be re-evaluated. If after two weeks, the wound has:

  • improved, but there are continuing signs of infection, it may be clinically justifiable to continue use of silver dressings with regular review
  • improved and there are no longer signs or symptoms of infection, the silver dressing should be discontinued
  • not improved, the silver dressing should be discontinued and the patient reviewed and a dressing containing a different agent initiated, with or without systemic antibiotics."3

How to use this wound care product.

  • Open the protective pouch.
  • Carefully remove the dressing from the pouch with asceptic technique and forceps.
  • Cut the dressing using clean scissors or simply fold the dressing to fit the wound.
  • Applyto the wound bed.
  • Loosely pack deep wounds.
  • Ensure the dressing does not overlap the wound margins.
  • Cover and secure the dressing with a non-occlusive secondary dressing.
  • Change the dressing dependent upon its reaching absorbency capacity or according to good wound care practice. Do not exceed 7-days.

Where to use this product?

"Silvercel Non-Adherent is suitable for use on wounds, which are infected, critically colonised or judged to be at high risk of infection. They can be applied to leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, diabetic foot wounds, surgical and traumatic wounds. Those with known sensitivity to alginates, silver and EMA should not use the dressing." 4

Who should use this product?

Patients with moderate to heavy exudating wounds, chronic or acute wounds, partial or full-thickness wounds, pressure ulcers, venous ulcers, diabetic ulcers, traumatic surgical sounds, or donor sites are good candidates for Silvercel.5

Brand Logotype

What is Sivercel used for?

Its use is for the management of all moderate to heavily exudating wounds, partial and full-thickness chronic wounds including decubitus (pressure) ulcers, venous ulcers, diabetic ulcers, donor sites, and traumatic surgical wounds.

Is Silvercel the same as silver AG?

Both products are closely related. The difference between the two dressings is that Silvercel employs an ethylene methyl acrylate (EMA) outer film layer that uses EasyLIFT Precision Film technology. EMA is a synthetic polymer that allows the bandage to be easily removed. It is thin, strong, flexible, and has a smooth surface.

How does silver help wound healing?

"The action is accomplished by the silver ions binding to tissue proteins causing a structural change in the bacterial cell membranes.... The aim of treatment with silver dressings is to reduce wound bioburden, treat local infection, and prevent systemic spread: their main purpose is not to promote wound healing directly."6

How does Alginate help with wound healing?

Alginate dressings absorb wound exudate, forming a gel that in-turn provides a dry wound bed with a physiologically moist environment. It minimizes bacterial and promotes rapid re-epithelialization and granulation tissue formation. Initially, when placed on an open wound, Alginate dressings are dry and grow larger and more gel-like as they absorb exudate. The absorption clears out the wound bed, preventing it from becoming dry, and protects it from harmful bacteria.

They cover or fill a variety of wound beds, including heavily colonized wounds with pathogenic bacteria. It has calcium and sodium fibers derived from seaweed. These seaweed fibers can absorb moderate to large amounts of wound drainage and help control minor bleeding.

How to use this dressing with a compression bandage.

The product offers best absorption under compression when used in combination with a seconday dressing like the Tielle Plus Hydropolymer Dressing.
