Types of Oxygen Masks

For medical and at-home use, common oxygen mask types include:

  • Non-rebreather masks: Equipped with a one-way valve and reservoir, this mask fits over both the nose and mouth to supply oxygen during an emergency. These masks are typically deployed following smoke inhalation or carbon monoxide poisoning. The design blocks the patient from breathing in anything they exhale yet doesn’t create a firm seal around the face.
  • Partial rebreather masks: Also covering the nose and mouth, this mask uses a two-way valve to facilitate oxygen therapy for individuals who don’t require assistance with breathing. Patients partially rebreathe what they’ve exhaled.
  • Simple oxygen masks: These masks deliver up to 55% of oxygen flow. Typically a disposable mask, this solution is geared toward patients needing partial assistance with breathing and may be dealing with another medical condition — for example, a heart attack or hemorrhaging.
  • Face masks and nasal cannulas: On their own, nasal cannulas assist with the delivery of oxygen therapy for individuals living with a respiratory condition. A standard or Venturi face mask performs a similar role to facilitate the delivery of oxygen. A nasal cannula or face mask may be recommended to manage symptoms of asthma, cystic fibrosis, pneumonia, sleep apnea or COPD.
