Catheters are medical tubes constructed of thin plastic, vinyl, silicone or rubber and are used to deliver fluids or remove fluids to or from the body. The process of catheter insertion is called catheterization. Medical Catheters are manufactured in widths usually designated in French sizes and lengths usually designated in inches or centimeters. Types of catheters include Urinary Catheters and Suction Catheters. Urinary catheters include External Catheters, Intermittent Catheters, Foley Catheters, and Touchless Catheters. Suction catheters include bronchial catheters, trachea catheters, Yankauer catheters, and oral catheters.

Urinary Catheters

External Catheters are male catheters that enclose the penis to capture escaping urine. External Catheters are usually made of latex or silicone and are sometimes referred to as Condom Catheters. Intermittent Catheters are inserted into the bladder and drain to a Urinary Leg Bag or Bedside Drainage Bag. Foley Catheters are similar to an intermittent catheter but have an added feature of a balloon device on the internal end of the catheter to hold the catheter in place. Touchless Catheters are intermittent catheters used as part of a closed system for sterility. Internal catheterization is facilitated by the use of sterile Catheter Lubricants like Fougera Surgilube Lubricant.

Suction Catheters

Suction Catheters are attached to a tracheostomy tube or endotracheal tube for removing excess fluid from breathing airways or the lungs.
