Description
Who Uses This Product?: Doctors purchase this kit to provide rapid in-office testing for fecal occult blood.
Why Give It a Try?: Hemmoccult Sensa has proven accuracy for doctors to offer a quick diagnostic tool. The developer turns blue when occult blood is present to puts patients at ease. If positive, a colonoscopy is scheduled.
Overview
Hemoccult Sensa Single Slides, by manufacturer Beckman Coulter, provide a convenient rapid test for enhanced occult blood sensitivity readings for the early detection of precancerous adenomas and colorectal cancer. Hemoccult Sensa has proven success in its chemical analysis readings using Guaiac, a chemical that will turn blue in the presence of occult blood that may stem from bleeding in the stomach or colon.
How Is the Hemoccult Sensa Used?
The Sensa test is performed in a clinical setting under the direction of the doctor. It's a fast and noninvasive test, making it easy for patients to provide a fecal sample during a routine gastrointestinal screening appointment. The developer test solution with Guaiac, is applied to the stool sample for quick chemical analysis, a proven qualitative method that quickly turns the sample blue when positive for occult blood.1 In fact, patients get results within 60 seconds without painstakingly waiting for the sample to be taken to a laboratory. Patients with a positive blue sample will be recommended to have a colonoscopy to determine the source of the blood as a positive test result does not definitively mean the patient has colon cancer.
Instructions to Increase Accuracy of the Hemoccult Sensa Test
Patient's should be instructed to follow the Special Diagnostic Diet at least 72 hours before the stool sample is collected. This helps rid the body of interfering substances or medication in the diet that could read a false positive.
Common Interferences
- Food: Avoid red meat and processed meats. Avoid fruits and vegetables known to have high levels of peroxidases such as melons, radishes, and turnips.
- Medication: Avoid alcohol, aspirin, corticosteroids, and anticoagulants. These substances are known to irritate and cause bleeding in the GI tract and present a false-positive result.
- Ascorbic Acid: Avoid taking a vitamin C or iron tablet that exceeds 250 milligrams, which has been shown to cause false-negative test results.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What does it mean when the Hemoccult test is positive?
A positive test means that there is occult blood detected, but a colonoscopy will determine the source and therefore it doesn't mean the patient has colorectal cancer.
How accurate are Hemoccult tests?
The test's accuracy is as high as 70 percent.2
If the Sensa test is positive, but no cancer is detected, can occult blood be cured?
Yes, if no other abnormalities are found, an enteroscopy procedure can cauterize the lesions causing the bleeding.
Can occult blood be from hemorrhoids?
Although hemorrhoids can cause a positive test result, it is rare. If positive, the healthcare provider will conduct more tests to find the cause of occult blood.
