Material Highlight: (Vitreous) Baked Enamel

Baked enamel is a finish used on a variety of products that is durable and less likely to fade or chip. This is because this finish is a thin coating of glass. While the process of enameling metal has been around for hundreds of years and has been primarily decorative, the modern applications of it tend to be more industrial. Baked enamel is primarily used to apply colored coatings to metal that will be chip-resistant, not fade, and remove the need for eventual repainting. Since glass is chemically inert, it is a commonly used coating in devices or machines that may come into contact with chemicals or substances that may cause the metal structure beneath it to corrode. As a result, many products commonly found in the kitchen, bathroom, or garage have enamel coatings. Baked enamel is done by coating a piece of metal in a powdered glass substrate then heating to anywhere from 1,400 to 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat causes the glass particles in the substrate to melt and congeal together, creating a seamless barrier between the metal and the outside air. This final barrier creates a smooth, easy-to-clean finish that will look like lacquered paint with little to no work to maintain.
