NOTE: VitalityMedical is not licensed to sell the Emerson Cough Assist to any person or persons other than licensed hospitals, rehab clinics, homecare centers, or other authorized individuals. Purchasers are also required to be trained on the CoughAssist. You can Click here to visit Emerson's homepage and view an instructional video. You can also contact us @1-800-397-5899 for more information or to obtain a free training CD-ROM.The Emerson Cough-Assist helps with the removal of bronchial secretions. It is safe, simple and effective. The CoughAssist Mechanical In-Exsufflator, or Cofflator, safely and effectively clears retained broncho-pulmonary secretions, reducing the risk of respiratory complications. It comes standard withan adjustable internal inhale-flow restrictor, a simpler breathing circuit, and an optional mobile stand. How does it work?Using a process called "mechanical insufflation-exsufflation," the CoughAssist gradually applies a positve pressure to the airway followed by a rapid shift to negative pressure. This rapid shift produces a high expiratory flow from the lungs, simulating a cough. The technique avoids airway damage and offers an alternative to an invasive procedure while still offering patients greater comfort and quality of life. What is it good for?The CoughAssist has been proven effective for patients with an insufficient ability to cough due to: - Poliomyelitis
- Muscular Dystrophy
- Spinal Muscular Atrophy
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
- Myasthenia Gravis
- Guillain-Barre Sydrome
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Or any other neurological disorder with some paralysis of the respiratory muscles, such as a spinal cord injury
What should I consider before purchasing? - Any patient unable to cough or clear secretions effectively due to reduced peak cough expiratory flow (less than 3 liters per second), resulting from high spinal cord injuries, neuromuscular deficits or severe fatigue associated with intrinsic lung disease, is a condidate for the CoughAssist
- Any patient with a history of bullous emphysema, known susceptibility to pneumothorax, or pneumo-mediastinum, or known to have had any recent barotrauma, should consult seriously with a physician before using.
How is it used? The CoughAssist is versatile enough to be used with a facemask, mouthpiece or, with an adapter, to a patient's endotracheal or tracheostomy tube. It is also safe enough to be used on both adult and pediatric patients at home or in a hospital/institutional environment. What options are available? The CoughAssist is available in both an automatic and manual models.- Manual: CM-3000 (110-volt) - Use a manually operated valve to shift from positive to negative pressure and back.
- Automatic: CA-3000 (110-volt) - Have timing mechanisms to automate the inspiratory and expiratory cycles, as well as a manual control.
- The CoughAssist meets all US, Canadian and European electrical standards.
NOTICE: U.S. Federal Law restricts this device to sale by or on order of a physician.Device Specifications: - Maximum Positive Pressure: 60cm (44mm Hg)
- Maximum Negative Pressure: 60cm (44mm Hg)
- Maximum Inhalation Flow: 3.3. liters/second minimum; 10 liters/second maximum
- Maximum Exhalation Flow Capacity: 10 liters/second; flow dependant on max pressure and airway resistance
