Common Questions About Scales
What Is BMI (Body Mass Index)?

What Is BMI (Body Mass Index)?

BMI stands for Body Mass Index and is a measurement of body fat. The purpose of BMI is to take height into account in determining appropriate weight.

How do I measure BMI?

To manually measure your weight, do the following:

  1. Multiply your weight in pounds by 703
  2. Divide that number by your weight in inches
  3. Divide again by your weight in inches
Or, you can use the helpful calculator below to determine your BMI. Vitality Medical offers a variety of scales to help you measure your weight as well. Note: This calculator does not constitute medical advice. You should always consult with your physician to determine your appropriate weight.

Weight: lbs.   According to the Panel on Energy, Obesity, and Body Weight Standards published by American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, your category is:
Height: Ft. In.

Are there any limitations to the BMI?

While the BMI is considered reliable, there are some limitations. Athletes, and those who have large muscle mass, may be incorrectly reported as being obsese. BMI will be incorrectly reported in people who have lost muscle mass, such as the elderly. BMI is not appropriate for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

BMI does not take weight placement into account either. Where your fat is located is as important as the amount of it. The are of greatest concern is the fat around the waist. Measure your waist above the hip bone. For men, a waist under 40 inches is considered acceptable, and for women, a waist under 35 inches is healthy.

What are the risks of being overweight or obsese?

If you are overweight or obsese you have a higher chance of the following:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Some cancers
  • Lipid disorders

My BMI is over 25, what should I do?

The most important thing you can do is consult with your physician to determine the necessary steps. Your physician will most likely recommend weight loss through a combination of dieting and exercise. The U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services provides some tips for losing weight. Even a small amount of weight loss can significantly help reduce your risk for health problems. If your physician does recommend weight loss, the most important thing is to not give up and keep trying.
