What Are The Different Types Of Bariatric Surgery?

Gastric Bypass surgery has become increasingly common in the United States. It can be divided into three rough categories: Gastric Bypass, laproscopic banding, and mouth wiring. While there are many different variations on these types of surgery, only the most common types will be covered here.

What is Roux-en-Y bypass surgery?

WebMD notes that the most common form of Gastric bypass surgery is called Roux-en-Y, which involves creating a small pouch of stomach which is then attached to the small intestine, thus "bypassing" the rest of the stomach. Medline Plus explains that the bypass skips the part of the digestive tract involved with absorbing fat, therefore less fat intake is reduced.

What is Vertical Banded gastric bypass?

Vertical banded gastric bypass, as explained by the Mayo Clinic, is a surgery creates a bottleneck in between two parts of the stomach. The first part of the stomach can only take in a small portion of food, which then slowly moves into the second part of the stomach. The Mayo Clinic also notes that studies indicate that this surgery is not as effective as other surgeries, so it is not as common. University of Pennsylvania Health Services indicates that there is no difference in nutrition or vitamin absorption.

What is Biliopancreatic gastric bypass surgery?

The Mayo Clinic describes Biliopancreatic gastric surgery saying that takes out a portion of the stomach. They also note that because this surgery bypasses areas which absorb nutrition it can be difficult to get the proper amount of vitamins. New Jersey Bariatrics adds that this the surgery can adjust the bypass in less obese patients(BMI 4-50) so that the absorption rate is better.

What is Laproscopic banding?

With laproscopic banding an elastic band is placed of part of the stomach. With adjustable band lapropscopic surgery the band can be adjusted or even removed with surgery. This type of treatment has the advantage in that it be changed to meet new weights and food intake. The International Laproscopic Obesity Surgery Team also points out that the surgery can be reversed, has short hospital visits, and doesn't require the cutting of the stomach.

How does mouth wiring work?

Mouth wiring is another form of bariatric surgery. As the name implies, mouth wiring surgery wires the mouth so that a strict liquid only diet must be maintained. While it has been shown effective, WebMD notes that it is only used for a couple of months on each patient and that it can lead to nutritional deficiencies if not carefully watched.
